Everyone of us is blessed with a potential to lead. Some of us discover it early, while some others never do – only to go through lives completely unaware. LeadCap diaries narrate leadership lessons from the experiences of some real people around us. The more you read and reflect on these experiences, the more easily you would gain confidence to rise to a leadership role.

At the same time, there are still many more stories that have leadership lessons which we could all learn from. They could be fables that you have heard, biographies that you have read or even your own life experiences. These stories and lessons could break more myths and could help in drawing more people towards a leadership experience. Share these stories with us by mailing them across to mail@leadcap.org.

Fighting the Fight Till the End!

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

I remember studying history back in my good old school days! I loved history! It always taught me something from great leaders good or bad! I loved reading about the great Mughals, the khilji’s, the lodhi’s, Tuglag’s the kingdoms of Southern India like the Vijayanagara, the Bahaman and so on.

However nothing thrills me more to read about Julies Caesar, Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan! WOW! What awesome leaders they were! They did leave a trail of blood, but that is not what impress me. It is their strategy, approach and attitude that they had when faced with difficulties that impress me!

When Julies Caesar was in today’s England for a war, he was faced with a dilemma. His soldiers were disappointed and were not willing to fight as they felt very insecure by just looking at the Anglo- Saxons. They wanted to go back to Rome, feel safe at home and that looked nice to them. But this is what Julies Caesar did. He Burnt the entire fleet of Roman ships. When he did it, his soldiers knew that the only way back home is by winning the Anglo Saxons. And that is exactly what they did.

Quite often in our life, we feel very lethargic, tired and worn out! The easiest stuff that we could possibly do is to call it quits and hang our boots. That’s Easy! But that is not what we are called to be. We are called to fight on, and to hang on. To take challenges head on and be able to face challenges eye ball to eye ball, square in the face and say: No matter what it is, I can face this a little more, I can endure a little more pain. I will be standing at the end of the battle to see my victory, I will persevere and endure through pain to enjoy and experience the fruit of my labor!

Winning is worth it! Fight till the end!

Forward March

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

I and Rajesh were witnesses to the first Leadership march that began at Mahatma Gandhi Park a fortnight back. Subsequently, the organisers have had another successful weekend march at Jayanagar drawing people from all walks of life. The next march is slated in Indiranagar this March 2nd.
I caught up with Sangeeth Varghese, founder, Leadcap and asked him the rationale behind the marches, something that’s slowly but surely catching the attention of Bengalureans.
Here he is with his passionate answer.

IT’S TIME WE STOOD UP!

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

For now, everything seems to be hunky-dory in Bangalore. Our incomes are growing, our businesses are flourishing. Yet, we are missing out an important point. Just beneath our city’s cosmetic good looks we are entrenched in a quagmire of problems. Our roads are infested, our traffic snarls, our systems are breaking down. We are seeped in problems all around. Our city will tank in, if something is not done with the deepest sense of urgency.

It’s time we stood up!

We are currently like ostriches – burying our heads deep inside this quagmire pretending that everything is going to be all right some day. At the same time we also do not spare any chance of criticizing the system – but always sitting inside the comfort of our cars and offices. We blame our politicians, our bureaucrats and even the other citizens. It is always ‘them’ who are to be blamed. Never ‘us’. It is time we realised that pretending that the problems are not there would not wish them away. And excusing ourselves from the state of the city, again would not improve anything.

It’s time we stood up!

We have received so much from this city – our well-being, our present, our future. We owe everything to this city. And now it is time to give back. Let us all stop making excuses that it is not up to us, but is up to them. Because ultimately it is up to us. Because ultimately this city is our home. Because ultimately we are all itching to get involved. Waiting to stand up and contribute.

It’s time we stood up!

It is time for us to come out of our cosy homes, cocoons and comfort zones to tackle and solve our city’s problems. It is time for us to nudge each other to remind that it is not up to ‘them’, but up to us. It is up to us to build our Bangalore. Because we are Bangalore, and Bangalore is us.

On the 10th February, Sunday, you could either watch a movie in the cosiness of your home, shop at the comfort of a mall or you could stand up and lead. If you even care the least for Bangalore, then come out and join this symbolic and historic march along with us. Declaring that it is our city and we would build it together.

Join the march on February 10th, 9.30am. Assembly at the Gandhi statue near MG road Cricket stadium. Route: Kasturba road, Vittal Mallya Road, Residency Road and Richmond Road. Walk would culminate at the Richmond town ground, where experts will engage and inspire us on how we can build Bangalore as a city of our dreams.

It’s time we stood up!

We forward so many junk email to many of our friends, now let us do it for some useful cause to build our city, our home, our dreams.

Empathy – What does it mean?

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

One of the most important qualities that a leader needs to possess is empathy. The simplest meaning that is floating around is trying to put yourself in others shoes (Dictionary meaning - Understanding and entering into another’s feelings).

One could be charismatic with their communication skills, the way they carry themselves, being friendly with their people, being creative etc. But one can become a leader if and only if one has got the ability to sense what his/her people need.

But the most bothering issue for everyone in the present environment is how to be understanding when they are pressured with so many things on their plates?

This incidence took place few years back when a person joined my colleague’s team. He was teaching prior to joining his team. Seemed to be an enthusiastic chap but after few days we realised that he wanted everything in his plate and never wanted to stretch himself to learn something. He was more interested in getting involved in others business than equipping himself.

On the third day he came back to my colleague and told him that he is planning to quit. The reason being he was not able to handle the work pressure. If somebody had come to me, that too on the third day itself, I would have happily asked them to get lost (there is nothing for me loose when he is just 2 days with the company). To my surprise though my friend was really busy decided to spend sometime with him immediately rather than asking him to come back after sometime/get lost.

He was really to the point and saw things from his angle, he was in to teaching and he was not able to accustom himself to the corporate world. He encouraged him and eased things for him. Over a period of 3 months the chap who said “I want to quit right now” became one of the good finds and eased out lot of pressure from my colleague’s team and even bagged the best performance for that quarter.

This thought a very good lesson; my colleague didn’t waste half an hour on that day when he had so many things to be delivered on his desk. Leadership is all about empowering people, one need to invest their time on people to see the change. You need to get in to your team members comfort zone if you want them to give their ears to you.

Important lessons

1. My colleague spending half an hour with that fresher at a very crucial time wasn’t a waste; it proved to be an excellent investment.
2. Try to see the hidden potential than taking things on its face value.
3. People needs time to settle, you might be excellent on a job but you can’t expect others to be equally good immediately. You would have learnt by doing lot of mistakes before becoming a master.

Leadership is all about knowing your people and drive them to achieve what they think as impossible.

What is Leadership?

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

Leadership is an interactive conversation that pulls people toward becoming comfortable with the language of personal responsibility and commitment.

Leadership is not just for people at the top. Everyone can learn to lead by discovering the power that lies within each one of us to make a difference and being prepared when the call to lead comes.

Albert Einstein once said, “We should take care not to make the intellect our god; it has, of course, powerful muscles but no personality. It cannot lead; it can only serve.” Leaders know and science has discovered emotionality’s deeper purpose: the timeworn mechanisms of emotion allow two human beings to receive the contents of each other’s minds. Emotion is the messenger of love; it is the vehicle that carries every signal from one brimming heart to another.

Leadership is applicable to all facets of life; a competency that you can learn to expand your perspective, set the context of a goal, understand the dynamics of human behavior and take the initiative to get to where you want to be.
